• Able to identify the specific research needs of the product development teams, and other clients
• Designs, implements, analyzes, interprets and reports research results evaluating the performance of products, guiding the product development process, and supporting product innovation.
• Integrates data derived from a testing sequence to present a comprehensive picture of outcomes and actions, both those indicated and those taken.
• Able to evaluate, develop, and implement new sensory methods to address specific sensory/consumer issues.
Essential Functions: • Ability to frame product developer’s research needs into actionable sensory and consumer studies. • In-depth understanding of sensory science as a discipline.
• Able to put scientific principles into action in a business setting, to achieve results that move projects forward. Accepts responsibility for making things happen.
• Responsible for timely, cost-effective research execution within guidelines and standards set by the sensory profession as a whole.
• Able to conduct both analytical sensory (descriptive and discrimination) and consumer testing (qualitative, quantitative and exploratory). Experienced in consumer testing for the substantiation of advertising claims. Knowledgeable in the rules and regulations governing such testing (network guidelines, ASTM Guidelines, NAD Case Reports, etc.)
• Experienced in the development, training and maintenance of Descriptive Analysis Panels.
• In-depth knowledge of technical tools that support sensory testing (automated data collection systems, statistical software). Proficiency in statistical analysis.
• Keeps abreast of, and brings new test methods to the Institute for Evaluation Sciences.
Financial Accountability: Responsible for obtaining competitive project bids from field services, assessing the cost/value ratio, and recommending a course of action.
Non-Essential Functions: Active and contributing member of at least one sensory evaluation/consumer research organization
Principal Relationships: • Professional and technical staff at the Institute for Evaluation Sciences • Product Development Teams • Quality Assurance and Manufacturing • All RD&E Staff
Education and Experience: • BA or BS required; MS in Sensory Science preferred, or a related Master’s degree (Psychology, Human Factors, Statistics). • Minimum of 7 years of experience in a corporate environment. • Knowledge of or experience with the testing of personal care products a plus.
Environmental, Health and Safety Responsibilities: • Report all accidents and actively participate in accident investigations. • Report all unsafe conditions. • Be aware of and follow the Environmental Policy and work instructions/procedures that apply to the job. • Attend training as assigned. • Maintain work area in safe condition by ensuring the work area is clean and orderly.
